Expenses in Germany are high, and if you are a student, they can be even higher. That is why, the Bavarian government has approved of giving a little help to all fellow students by reducing the price of the Deutschlandticket aka this new Bavarian discount ticket.

What Is The Student Deutschlandticket / 29 Euro Train Ticket In Germany?

The Student Deutschlandticket (The Bavarian discount ticket) is set for release starting in September 2023 and will be available for purchase until 31st December of the same year.

This ticket functions precisely like a regular Deutschlandticket, which means it can be used for limitless travel inside the country on any regional train, on any day of the week, including holidays.

Who Is Eligible For The Student Deutschlandticket / 29 Euro Train Ticket?

As it says on the ticket name, this ticket will be available for students. Whether you are a university student, a trainee or a volunteer (in Bavaria).

It is important to note that during the application for the ticket, you will have to submit proof that you are matriculated at a Bavarian University or, for trainees and volunteers, the Bavaria-wide standardized form or their training contract.

This ticket functions precisely like a regular Deutschlandticket, which means it can be used for limitless travel inside the country on any regional train, on any day of the week, including holidays. But do make sure to keep in mind the fine print!

These are the transportation methods not covered by the 49 euro ticket;

  • Long distance trains; ICs, ICEs and ECs
  • 1st class or special booking train sections
  • Flixtrain or Flix busses

When Will The Student Deutschlandticket Be Available?

The 29 Euro Student Deutschlandticket has been available for purchase since the 10th of August.

For certain universities (MBS, ISM, FOM) and trainees, it’s use has been available since the 1.09.23 and for other universities (TUM, LMU, HM), it will be available from 1.10.23.

How To Change From Existing Subscription To The Student Deutschlandticket

In order to change the 49 Euro ticket for the 29 Euro ticket, you must first cancel the 49 Euro ticket subscription. The ticket won’t be automatically turned into a 29€ ticket at the start of the semester.

The Deutschlandticket must be cancelled by the 10th day of the preceding month with the specific transport company from which you obtained the Deutschlandticket (MVG, DB, BRB…).

Then, you must submit your application here. In order to do so, you must have an account on M-login.

In What Form Will I Get The The Student Deutschlandticket / 29 Euro Train Ticket?

The Student Deutschlandticket can be purchased in two forms. Either the phone ticket form, which will be available through the MVGO app or, through the chip card form.

The latter option however, takes longer to be received and so we recommend you to use the phone ticket, as it is faster in arrival and, unless you forget/lose your phone, unforgettable.

Is The The Student Deutschlandticket Transferable?

As with the standard Deutschlandticket, this is unfortunately not possible.

How Do I Cancel My Student Deutschlandticket?

The Deutschlandticket/Student Deutschlandticket is an ongoing subscription with the price being automatically deducted from your bank account on a monthly basis.

In order to cancel, follow this quick summary;

  • Visit the website or app where you bought your ticket (such as the German Bahn website, DB Navigator app, or local public transport association’s site).
  • You can cancel and get a full refund if your ticket is purchased before the 10th day of the current calendar month.
  • To avoid being charged for the next month, cancel your ongoing subscription before the 10th day of the current month. (For example, if you want to cancel a July subscription, you must do so by June 10.)

How Do I Buy The Student Deutschlandticket If I Don’t Have A German Bank Account?

This monthly subscription-based ticket provides all the advantages of budget travelling in Germany, except that it must be paid by an automatic debit from a German bank account, or an IBAN.
