Mark your calendars summer city commuters, there’s a Munich ubahn temporary closure coming in June! But have no fear, we’ve got all the important details for you below!
(how cool is this map though! We find it pretty darn helpful)
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: When Will Happen?
A complete renovation of the switch system near the Sendlinger Tor ubahn station will take place from Monday, June 12 to Sunday, July 30, 2023. As a result, U3 and U6 services will be interrupted in the centre of the city, aka plan on a temporary bus and train shuttle set up!
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: Why Is This Happening?
U6/U3 intersection is one of Munich’s busiest public transportation intersections. Considering the heavy use the system has received over the past 50 years, it must be replaced in order to maintain the quality of service. So in short, just your regularly scheduled repair times!
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: Which Trains Will Still Be Running?
Since there will be no ubahn services between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz during the construction work, SEV (temporary line replacement routes) buses will be running. Shuttle trains will operate between Sendlinger Tor and Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz. As a result, capacity is also reduced in this area.
You can also reach your destination by taking the following routes:
- Bus lines X3/X6 and U4/U5 via Hauptbahnhof
- U1/U2/U7 and U4/U5 via Hauptbahnhof
- U2 instead of U3 to and from Schwabing West, Milbertshofen and Moosach (via Scheidplatz)
- S-Bahn lines from and to Marienplatz
- S7 between Sendling and the city center
or just with the existing bus lines such as the express bus X30 (Harras – Ostbahnhof) or line 54 (Giesing – Harras)
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: Where is The U3 Running?
During the construction work, the U3 will become a North Branch (Moosach/Odeonsplatz) and South Branch (Goetheplatz/Forstenried West).
- The U3 North and the U3 South run every 10 minutes.
- You can use the replacement bus lines U3 and U6 between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz. It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk the route (approximately 800 meters). Between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Goetheplatz, there is also the substitute bus line X3.
- Approximately every 10 minutes, a shuttle train runs between Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz, and Sendlinger Tor.
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: Where is The U6 Running?
The U6 will be transformed into a North Branch (Garching Research Center / Fröttmaning / Odeonsplatz) and a South Branch (Implerstraße / Klinikum Großhadern).
- Between Garching-Forschungszentrum and Odeonsplatz, the U6 North runs every 10 minutes. As usual, the service between Garching-Forschungszentrum and Münchner Freiheit runs every five minutes during rush hours.
- There is a U6 South service that runs every ten minutes between Implerstraße and Klinikum Großhadern.
- You can take the substitute bus U6 between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße. There is also a substitute bus line X6 running between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Implerstraße.
- Approximately every 10 minutes, a shuttle train runs between Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz, and Sendlinger Tor.
Munich Ubahn Temporary Closure: What Buses Are Available?
There will be multiple options available with the replacement buses, but unfortunately as a result of the replacement buses, commuters on the U3 and U6 will be delayed by approximately 15 minutes.
There are four bus lines that run at regular intervals as part of the rail replacement service (SEV). This system replaces the subway and connects to the Hauptbahnhof as well.
Ubahn line U3/ Bus Line X3
- Goetheplatz and Sendlinger Tor are connected by bus line U3.
- Hauptbahnhof South and Goetheplatz are connected by bus line X3.
Ubahn line U6/ Bus Line X6
- As a ring line (counterclockwise), the U6 bus runs between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz, Poccistraße and Implerstraße, Tumblingerstraße and Goetheplatz.
- Line X6 operates as a ring route (counter-clockwise) between Hauptbahnhof Süd and Goetheplatz via Poccistraße, Implerstraße, Tumblingerstraße, and Goetheplatz.
