Lakes Near Munich: Walchensee
Journey time with regional trains: 1 hour from Munich
How to get there: Take a regional train to Kochel, then hop on a Regionalverkehr Oberbayern bus to Walchensee (9608, 9611, and 9612 – there are a few options)
One of the largest alpine lakes in the region, the waters of Walchensee are a gorgeous, crystalline blue and the views are to die for. Factor in a bit of extra time to get a hike in – once you get some height, your jaw will drop.

How to get there: Take the S8 to Herrsching
Ammersee is the best spot to watch the sunset – pair this lake trip with a hike up to the Andechs Monastery and treat yourself to a beer brewed by the monks.
Lakes Near Munich: Königssee
Journey time with regional trains: About 3 hours from Munich
How to get there: Get to Berchtesgaden train station (the best way depends on the time of day. There are no direct trains so you’ll need to switch, usually in Freilassing). Use the DB website to plan the best route. From Berchtesgaden train station, take the RVO buses to Königssee (lines 841 and 842) and Schönau (lines 842, 843 and 846).
Located in the Berchtesgaden National Park (close to the Austrian Border), Königssee is heralded both as the cleanest and most serene lake in Germany. A great trip for avid hikers with plenty of trails spiralling high above the glacial waters.
Lakes Near Munich: Schliersee
Journey time with regional trains: 1 hour from Munich
How to get there: Take a direct train from Hauptbahnhof to Schliersee
This lake is a stunner in the sun – excellent views all round, and several spots dotted around its shores to grab a beer or a schorle in the sunshine. Take an easy hike from the lake to the Hohenwaldeck castle ruins – you won’t regret the views.

How to get there: Take the direct train from Hauptbahnof to Prien am Chiemsee
If you’re looking for a bit of opulence, take a scenic boat ride across Chiemsee to Herrenchiemsee New Palace (located on Herreninsel in the lake) – this stunning royal complex boasts neo-baroque architecture in the style of Louis XIV – including Munich’s answer to the Hall of Mirrors.
